Tenn. Rep. Stewart Responds to Mitt Romney’s Plan to Voucherize Veterans’ Health Care

Rep. Mike Stewart

NASHVILLE – In response to Mitt Romney’s dangerous plan to voucherize our veterans’ health care, Tennessee State Rep. Mike Stewart, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, released the following statement today ahead of Romney’s fundraiser in Knoxville:

“Veterans’ healthcare is the moral responsibility of the American people. But under Mitt Romney’s disastrous proposal, America’s veterans, who have risked their lives to protect our country, would be left to fend for themselves on the open insurance market.

“Tennesseans believe in honoring our commitments—especially to our veterans. That means ensuring proper treatment and care for all our former service men and women—a commitment that every American president has honored since the VA Department was founded in 1930.

“A voucher is a coupon, not a commitment. These brave men and women volunteered to put on the uniform and fight for our country. They shouldn’t have to fight a privatized system for their healthcare the rest of their lives.

“Tennessee veterans deserve better. Unsurprisingly, this is the same Mitt Romney who wants to turn Medicare into a voucher program, who wants to let homeowners hit rock bottom, and who made a fortune breaking up American companies and shipping jobs overseas.”

Background:
Romney: Give vouchers to U.S. veterans:
Meeting with about a dozen veterans in South Carolina, GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney suggested privatizing the healthcare system of military veterans… “If you’re the government, they know there’s nowhere else you guys can go, you’re stuck,” Romney told the veterans. “Sometimes you wonder if there would be some way to introduce private sector competition, somebody else who could come in and say each solder has ‘X’ thousand dollars attributed to them and then they can choose where they want to go in the government system or the private system with the money that follows them. Like what happens with schools in Florida where people have a voucher that goes with him.” [UPI, 11/11/11]

Freshman Republican State Rep. Hurley Acknowledges Importance Of Recovery Act

Monday, December 27th, 2010

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Chip Forrester applauds freshman Republican state Rep. Julia Hurley for bucking her party and supporting the federal Recovery Act, which has pumped billions of dollars and thousands of jobs into much-needed infrastructure projects across the state.

“I am encouraged by Ms. Hurley’sacknowledgment on her Facebook page that the Recovery Act was a key element to turning our nation and our state’s economy around,” Forrester said. “It’s my hope that she and some of theother newly elected members of the General Assembly will do what’s best for our state and those of us who struggle daily to make ends meet.
“Too often politicians fall prey to the whims and ill-conceived notions of the day. I’m sure her Tea Party supporters will turn on her and try to run an opponent against her in the 2012 Primary Election. But I’m confident she will pick up some Democratic votes as long as she does what is best for her community and the state as a whole.”
The Lenoir City Republican defeated long-time Democratic state Rep. Dennis Ferguson of Harriman in November.
The Recovery Act has been credited with saving or creating nearly 3 million jobs across the U.S., with more than 16,000 jobs in Tennessee alone. Nearly billion has been committed to Tennessee in Recovery Act funding.
“When the Recovery Act was passed into law nearly two years ago, our economy was losing on average about 750,000 jobs a month,” Forrester said. “Foreclosures were at record levels, lending was frozen and our financial sector was onthe brink of total disaster. Our economy has turned the corner, though.
“But we are in no way out of the woods yet. That’s why frustrated voters elected new faces in Congress and state legislatures across the nation this past November. People expect their elected officials to respond quickly to challenges. Hopefully, Ms. Hurley will understand that and focus on job creation, better schools and safer communities instead of partisan politics,” he added.

GOP Rep. Cao Faces Recall Petition For Voting Against Stimulus

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Rep. Joseph Cao
Bayou Buzz reports that Rep. Joseph Cao, the Republican who replaced scandalized Democrat William Jefferson, now faces a recall petition over his stimulus opposition by a group of ministers.

Cao had indicated that he would be voting in favor of the controversial legislation but instead voted against it.

Papers have been filed with the Office of the Louisiana Secretary of State which started the process requiring sufficient signatures to force a recall election for the office held by Representative Cao.

Rev. Toris Young, one of the leaders of the effort, said the stimulus vote was the “last straw.”

Cao represents a majority African-American, and traditionally Democratic, district. However, the Times-Picayune says the ministers will have a hard time unseating him.

The Recall Anh Cao Committee faces daunting odds. The effort has 180 days from its filing Monday to gather 100,000 valid signatures from registered voters in the district — a third of all district voters — in order to get a recall vote. And even if they succeed at that, and voters approve the recall, it appears that Congress would not accept the result.

Black Rep. Jennifer Carroll – Rick Scott’s Choice for FL Lt Governor

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

BLACK REPUBLICAN JENNIFER CARROLL – RICK SCOTT’S CHOICE FOR FLORIDA’S LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR

By Frances Rice

The NBRA congratulates Florida State Representative Jennifer Carroll who was selected by Rick Scott, the Republican nominee for Florida’s governor, to be his running mate.  A 20-year U. S. Navy veteran and small business woman with over seven years of experience in the Florida legislature, Rep. Carroll is a superb choice to be Florida’s first black Republican lieutenant governor.  She is the Florida House Representative for District 13, which is in Jacksonville, and is the first black Republican woman to be part of a statewide ticket in Florida.

Rep. Carroll has realized the American Dream.  As a young girl, she legally immigrated to America from Trinidad, West Indies and served her country in the United States Navy, starting as an enlisted member and retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.  She obtained a higher education and subsequently started a small business.  She was first elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2003 and was subsequently re-elected in 2004, 2006, and 2008.  She was appointed Deputy Majority Leader by Speaker Johnnie Byrd for the period 2003 to 2004 and served as the Majority Whip from 2004 to 2006.

Rep. Carroll was the recipient of the NBRA’s Pioneer Award in 2007.  She was also a keynote speaker at NBRA’s first annual Black Republican Forum and was featured in the 2007 edition of the NBRA magazine, The Black Republican

She is the former Executive Director of the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs.  While serving with that agency, she was responsible for the claims and benefits of over 1.8 million veterans.  Under her leadership, more than million in retroactive compensation was awarded in 2001 to Florida Veterans.  She was responsible for the agency’s million budget, legislation, three state nursing homes and one domiciliary home.

Rep. Carroll is the former Chairperson of the Florida’s Council on Homelessness, and the Honorary Chair of the Florida Assembly of Black Republicans.  Currently, she is the Chairperson of the Republican Party of Florida African American Leadership Council.

Among her honors, Rep. Carroll received the First Coast African American Women Award in 1998; the Clay County Chamber of Commerce Military Person of the Year Award in 1996; the YMCA Black Achievers Award in 1996; and the Clay County Young Republican Club "One of Clay’s Most Influential People" Award.

As a small business owner, she knows what is required to create jobs.  Rep. Carroll is a perfect match for Rick Scott since she shares his conservative values of smaller government, lower taxes, reducing regulation, individual freedom and personal responsibility.  She also opposes the out-of-control spending of stimulus money that creates massive deficits, grows the government and kills private-sector jobs.  She has vowed to fight to end government control of healthcare through ObamaCare and increased regulations, such as cap and trade.

“I want to thank Rick Scott for the opportunity to join him in this race as his pick for Lieutenant Governor,” Rep. Carroll said during an interview. “Floridians are ready to elect a conservative outsider with private sector experience and a plan to create 700,000 jobs. Rick and I share core conservative principles like lower taxes, less regulation, and smaller government. I look forward to campaigning with Rick against Alex Sink, Rod Smith and their liberal agenda.”

Scott’s choice of Rep. Carroll, a smart and capable black woman, to be his running mate demonstrates his continued commitment to equality of opportunity, a founding principle of the Republican Party that was started in 1854 as the anti-slavery party and championed civil rights for blacks from the 1860′s through the 1960′s until today.
