THE MASSACHUSETTS MESSAGE

By Frances Rice

From the voters of Massachusetts came a stunning rebuke of President Barack Obama and his Democrat cohorts in Congress. Unmistakable was the clear and concise message shouted by Bay State voters across the political spectrum – WE DO NOT WANT SOCIALISM.

The repudiation of Obama’s socialist agenda began as a murmur of protest in the spring of 2009. During town hall meetings over that summer, the voices of citizens grew louder. For months, Tea Party protests drew millions of average Americans across the country, with over 2 million descending on Washington DC in September, according to National Park Service estimates. Obama and his Democrat congressional minions mocked the protesting citizenry. They expressed a lack of concern when in November the voters in Virginia and liberal New Jersey sent an anti-socialism shock wave throughout our body politic by electing Republicans as their governors.

Ignoring outraged citizens, Democrats on Christmas Eve passed the Senate version of their disastrous health care legislation, egregiously bribing senators for their votes, including the multi-million dollar payoffs to Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson and Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu. Blatantly dismissing Obama’s promise of transparency, Democrats proceeded to reconcile the Senate and House bills behind closed doors. Gleefully, Democrats sent a chilling message to the American public that there was nothing we could do to stop them.

Then came Scott Brown. A witty, down-to-earth guy from a small town, he traveled his state in a pickup truck, clearly articulating the dissatisfaction of Americans across the country. Seeking to capture the seat that Senator Ted Kennedy held for nearly a half century and that had not been held by a Republican in over three and a half decades, Brown boldly proclaimed that he would be the 41st vote against ObamaCare. He stated plainly that he would vote to halt the Democrats’ spending our nation into bankruptcy, giving billions of bailout dollars to corporations, and providing terrorists the same rights and privileges afforded American citizens. His message resonated well with the freedom-loving people of Massachusetts, the home of the Boston Tea Party of 1773 and the 1775 Concord shot that was heard around the world, the genesis of our nation’s blood-soaked journey to independence.

So, how did Obama and the Democrats respond to the Massachusetts earth-shattering vote that reverberated around our nation? They resolved to double down and cram down ObamaCare, gambling that Americans love entitlements more than they love freedom. A lesson Democrats learned from black Americans who consistently vote for Democrats in exchange for government handouts, even though the Democrats’ socialist policies have turned black communities into economic and social cesspools. A video posted on the Internet “Detroit in RUINS! (Crowder goes Ghetto)” provides a look at the type of devastation all of America will face, unless the voters in around the country rebel as urged in the video “America Rising: An Open Letter To The Democrats” and repeat in November the Massachusetts Miracle of January.

LP Monday Message: Order Declarations Today!

Monday, June 27th, 2011

From a message posted on the LP Blog on Jun 27, 2011:

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Please order high-quality glossy color copies of the Declaration of Independence for just 5 cents each today. (Minimum donation required.)

We need your order ASAP so we can get them to you by Saturday at the latest. Independence Day is next Monday!

These Declarations are perfect to hand out at neighborhood picnics, parades, and especially at Fourth of July fireworks celebrations where people are sitting around for an hour waiting for it to get dark.

Our Declarations are real easy to hand out. One person can hand out 500 in big crowds in about two hours. As I’m offering one, I just say, “Hi, would you like a free copy of the Declaration of Independence?”

You’ll be amazed how many people actually thank you for doing this. People will run after you and ask for extra copies.

The back of the flyer says, “This copy of the Declaration of Independence has been provided as a public service by the Libertarian Party.” Then it has our website (LP.org) and our phone number.

Recently we mailed a letter with a sample of the Declaration flyer to most of our current dues-paying members. It’s getting a little late to send that order form by mail, so please order online or call us at 202-333-0008 to order by phone right now. Allow 3 days for delivery.

We’ve posted a downloadable version of the Declaration of Independence you can print on your own. However, you can save time and money, and have much higher quality, and far more durable copies, if you order them from us. I’m not exaggerating when I tell you that the high-quality glossy copies we’ll mail to you are ten times more durable than home-printed versions, which is especially important for handing out on a hot humid day!

Again, you can get up to 20 copies per dollar you donate, but you don’t have to ask for that many. I hope many of you will order less (or donate extra), so we can use the extra money to help cover the cost of packing and shipping all these Declarations of Independence around the country. So, if you donate , you can get up to 1,000 Declarations of Independence — but you may actually want fewer, such as only 200 copies (or even just 10).

To order, please type “Declarations” and specify the quantity you want in the Comment box at the bottom of our membership or contribution page. If you don’t clearly specify a quantity, I’ll only ship one Declaration per dollar. If you don’t type “Declarations” or clearly indicate that you want the flyers, then I won’t ship any.

Also put your shipping address in the Comment box if it’s different from the address you entered above.

Example 1:

Comment (optional):
Declarations 100

Example 2:

Comment (optional):
Declarations 500
ship to:
100 Main St
Los Angeles, CA 90101

Thanks for helping to advertise the Libertarian Party by donating and getting up to 20 Declarations per dollar. (Minimum donation required.)

The Fourth of July is just a few days away! Donate and order your Declarations today!

Sincerely,

Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee

Libertarian Party Monday Message: Lights of Liberty Awards

Monday, February 7th, 2011

LP.org:

Dear Friend of Liberty,

Thanks to the generous support of our contributors, we raised around ,000 last week when we asked for help to buy a teleprompter. We’ll be ordering an affordable model shortly, along with lighting, a podium, and a few other things needed to help us generate good-quality videos. We really appreciate the financial support for this effort.

On to the awards: As you may know, many Libertarians are supporters of the Advocates for Self-Government, a nonprofit group dedicated to promoting liberty. In fact, two members of the Libertarian National Committee, Dr. James W. Lark, III and Mark Rutherford, sit on their board of directors.

The Advocates for Self-Government is now acknowledging 2010 libertarian activists with the Lights of Liberty Awards. The awards are for working at Operation Politically Homeless booths, giving libertarian speeches, and writing letters to the editor. There are clear, simple criteria to determine who qualifies for these awards. They aren’t just given to one person — everyone who qualifies can receive the award. Visit their site, and if you or someone you know qualifies, let the Advocates know.

Sincerely,

Wes Benedict
Executive Director
Libertarian National Committee

LP Monday Message: 2010 Recap

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Dear Friend of Liberty,

“This is the last Monday Message of 2010, and I thought I would take the opportunity to mention a few of the things our party has achieved this year.

  • Over 800 Libertarians ran as candidates in the November 2 election. (That’s up from about 600 in 2008 and also about 600 in 2006.) Our candidates got over 15 million votes total, and our candidates for U.S. House got over 1 million votes.
  • Throughout the year, at least 38 Libertarians were elected or re-elected to public office. Our list of elected Libertarians grew from 146 to 154.
  • We passed our goal of 5,000 in online contributions. The current up-to-the-minute total is on our home page.
  • Our total fundraising this year is significantly greater than last year, and also greater than 2006, the previous mid-term election year.
  • We started a program to distribute inexpensive Libertarian bumper stickers, door hangers, and T-shirts. We got orders for about 170,000 bumper stickers, about 650,000 door hangers, and over 1,000 T-shirts.
  • Our monthly pledge total increased from about ,000 per month to over ,000 per month.
  • Our Facebook fan count exploded from about 20,000 fans to over 134,000 fans.

Thanks to all our donors, candidates and volunteers for making 2010 a great year.

Please support the Libertarian Party and help make 2011 an even greater year!”

Sincerely,

Wes Benedict
Executive Director

A socialist message for Thanksgiving

Friday, November 26th, 2010

(excerpt from) World Socialist Web Site
Thanksgiving in America

US corporations shatter profit records
25 November 2010

US corporations took in .659 trillion in the third quarter, breaking records going back 60 years, according to a Commerce Department report released Tuesday. It was the seventh consecutive quarter of profit growth at “some of the fastest rates in history” according to the New York Times.

If any more proof were needed, the third quarter profit record exposes the lie promoted by Democrats and Republicans alike that only the “free market” and private businesses can reverse the nation’s 9.6 percent unemployment rate. The corporations and banks are sitting on a cash horde in the trillions of dollars. This money is not being used to hire workers, but to line the pockets of the executives and top shareholders…

The holiday season finds the lame duck 111th Congress putting the finishing touches on two years of wealth redistribution to the rich. It is almost certain to extend Bush-era income tax cuts for the richest Americans…

One result of these policies is that more people than ever, including those with jobs, are forced to turn to soup kitchens, even on a day when families traditionally gather for a holiday associated with the “bountiful harvest.” Charities across the country are reporting record demand for help on Thanksgiving—a holiday established at a national level by Abraham Lincoln in 1863 to honor the material abundance of the Republic, even in the midst of the Civil War…

We Stand For Open Government.
America does not stand still; we move forward

        President Barack Obama

For Democrats, changing politics in Washington means ensuring that government is open, transparent, and responsive to the

needs of the people.    President Obama has implemented the most sweeping ethics and transparency requirements in history,
building on steps taken by Democrats to limit the influence of special interests and ensure that government is accountable
to the people.

Democrats believe that government should be honest, transparent, and participatory.    For too long, lobbyists and special interests have held sway behind closed doors, and Americans have become skeptical that the voices of ordinary people are being heard.    The Obama Administration has taken unprecedented steps to restore the public’s faith in government by opening up the process of governing.

Transparency promotes accountability and provides information for citizens about what their government is doing.    We are committed to creating the most open, transparent, and accountable government in history. In the past few years, Democrats have taken steps to:

Bring unprecedented accountability to federal spending;

Rein in the influence of lobbyists in Washington;

Shut down the “revolving door” that allowed lobbyists to move freely from government to special interests and back;

Open more lines of communication with the American public;

Increase cooperation across all levels of government, as well as with nonprofit organizations, businesses, and individuals in the private sector.

Departments and agencies are using innovative tools, methods, and systems to solicit public feedback, offering Americans more opportunities to participate in policy making while providing government with the benefits of their collective expertise and information.    Openness strengthens our democracy and promotes honesty, efficiency, and effectiveness in government.

If the media are the message, what are we being told?

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Right now, you are looking at an Internet news site. The content is free to the users (you). It is updated multiple times throughout the day. Ten or 12 years ago, sites like this were few and far between. Today, they proliferate.

In the current issue of Coloradobiz magazine, columnist Jeff Rundles asks what it all means. And, since he looks to the late Marshall McLuhan for the answers, we had to bring you a taste:

I can’t imagine that a “newspaper” delivered electronically will change the game. The news organization itself has to be completely transformed not in the delivery of its content, but in the creation of the content itself. Think bloggers. Think Daily Beast. Think interactive. What is produced won’t be in a “subscriber’s” living room or on the front porch at a specified time, but rather in his pocket and her purse, always on, ever changing, constantly updated, under siege every moment, and at once immediately disposable and accessible forever.

But since I know nothing of McLuhan’s work, I’ll let him have the last word:

“The next medium, whatever it is — it may be the extension of consciousness — will include television as its content, not as its environment, and will transform television into an art form. A computer as a research and communication instrument could enhance retrieval, obsolesce mass library organization, retrieve the individual’s encyclopedic function and flip into a private line to speedily tailored data of a saleable kind.“ – Marshall McLuhan, 1962

Perhaps since McLuhan’s books were known for being dense, weighty and even a little circular, he became known more for the snappy one-liner than anything else. Here then, are some McLuhan quotes lifted from his estate’s website.

The future of the book is the blurb.

The ignorance of how to use new knowledge stockpiles exponentially.

Politics offers yesterday’s answers to today’s questions.

The answers are always inside the problem, not outside.

News, far more than art, is artifact.

The story of modern America begins with the discovery of the white man by the Indians.

So, to use the generic phrase, “new media,” how has new media affected the body politic? Has it, like all media before it, become the message?

“Political science is still sitting around trying to figure out what the effects will be,” said Colorado College political science professor Bob Loevy.

“What we know is that new media provides the opportunity to connect groups together for political action that is inexpensive and quick. It has had a tremendous impact on fund-raising.”

Loevy noted that political campaigns now regularly employ paid professionals to manage new media as an outreach tool.

Indeed, just looking at the most recent campaigns in Colorado, virtually every major candidate had a prominent “Donate Now” message on their website that was click-able and allowed people to literally donate right then. It is safe to say there will never be another major campaign without such functionality — at least not until something better and faster comes along.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Ken Buck posted his concession announcement to his website via Twitter. Republican Dan Maes announced via Facebook that he planned to raise a million dollars in a 24-hour period. It didn’t happen, of course, but …

YouTube videos of Ken Buck talking on various subjects became viral, spiraling out from their source until virtually everyone following the race had seen more than enough.

We can see that the medium matters, but with McLuhan long gone, who will tell us what it means?

Rich Whitney: A final campaign message to supporters

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Dave Schwab at Green Party Watch:

From Illinois Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney:

November 4, 2010 – 12:34 am

Don’t Lose Heart! Cause for Hope Amidst the Disappointment

A “Final” Campaign Message (But Read On!)
by Rich Whitney, 2010 Green Party Candidate for Governor

To the hundreds of people who supported me in my campaign for Governor, and to the roughly 100,000 or so who saw fit to vote for me, despite the politics of fear that swept Illinois this election season, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

We acknowledge our disappointment but are not consumed by it. We will assess the causes of our disappointing results but will not be obsessed by them. We live to fight another day, and fight on we shall.

When I first helped organize the Shawnee Green Party 14 years ago, and the Illinois Green Party 11 years ago, I knew that success would be a long-term project. After all, we are trying to do something that hasn’t been done since the Republican Party became a new major party just before the Civil War – break up the two-party stranglehold on our political system. There’s no road map for this, no political science text to fall back on. On the contrary, we are trying to rewrite the textbooks and demonstrate that we are not prisoners of our history.

Yesterday, we met with a setback but there are still grounds for encouragement. Despite my own loss, some of our other Green Party candidates did remarkably well, beginning with State Representative Jeremy Karpen, winning 35 percent of the vote against a much-better funded Machine Democrat candidate in the 39th District.

The people who worked on my campaign and other Green Party campaigns learned a lot, and future Green Party campaigns will be the stronger for it.

The central messages of this campaign:

  • fiscal responsibility;
  • creating a healthy education system and public sector through fair and progressive taxation and making the speculators pay their fair share back to society;
  • creation of a state bank;
  • tuition-free higher education;
  • a real commitment to renewable energy, energy efficiency and sustainable transportation as essential to our economic and environmental future;
  • creating worker-owned and community-owned enterprises as a sustainable job-providing alternative to the corporate-model, and other good, positive public policy ideas,

have not been lost on the people who heard them. They have at least entered the political discourse in Illinois, and we in the Green Party will continue to fight for their implementation.

You can still help us in the Green Party make future progress.

In the short term, we still have some unfinished business related to this campaign. The debate sponsors who unfairly and unjustly excluded me from some of the debates are going to face the consequences of their actions. One ally of my campaign, on his own initiative, has already filed complaints with the IRS over these non-profit organizations that engaged in partisan political activity. Last Friday, LeAlan Jones, the Illinois Green Party and I filed suit in federal court against WTTW, the Public Broadcasting Service and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, for using taxpayer dollars and the public airwaves, to promote the campaigns of the Democratic and Republican candidates, by holding debates that excluded the Green Party candidates. We want them to pay – literally and figuratively – for what they did.

We also have some unfinished business with the Chicago Board of Elections. In addition to the “Whitey” incident, we have received an additional credible report of an electronic voting machine literally flipping votes from me to Pat Quinn. We had reports of an election judge training session in which the instructor disparaged the Green Party. We are continuing to investigate and we are calling on the authorities to investigate. We aren’t taking this lying down. The Party of Green will continue to take on the Chicago Machine until we win.

This campaign ended with a slight deficit. Considering this, as well as our ongoing post-election battles, additional donations would still be helpful.

Finally, I urge you to Join the Green Party if you have not already done so. It always drives me crazy when people make statements like, “Well, I would support the Green Party but it’s too small,” or “it’s too ineffective.” How do you think it gets bigger and how do you think it becomes more effective without more people joining it? The Green Party is only as strong as the people who participate in it. Get involved! Don’t sit on the sidelines – be part of the solution! As Edmund Burke warned, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men [and women] do nothing.”

The policy solutions that I have fought for in this campaign I will continue to fight for as a Green Party activist, and as a supporter of our next wave of candidates, and it is appropriate for me to close on that note. One of our Ten Key Values is Future Focus. We are already gearing up for new challenges in the municipal elections. Although these are technically non-partisan races, we can still identify and support our own. In my home town of Carbondale, we expect to be running our first true Green Party candidates for City Council and Mayor. In Chicago, we have some very good potential candidates, including one very promising candidate for Alderman, Alberto Bocanegra, who is already campaigning hard.

This election is over but we continue to pave the way for future successes. Stay strong, stay focused and above all, stay Green!
