In fundraising pitch, Jill Stein campaign updates supporters on progress toward receiving public funding

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Today Jill Stein’s campaign, aimed at securing the Green Party’s nomination for president, sent out a fundraising email with the pitch of “Double Your Green.”  That is, if Stein raises ,000 in donations of 0 or less from 20 or more states, the federal government will then match donations of that amount dollar-for-dollar.  Interestingly, the email contained a map of their progress toward that goal:

See below for a map showing how far along your state is toward qualifying for matching funds:

JillStein-Matching-Funds.png

The sooner we qualify, the better. That’s when we start doubling our green for the Green Party, which means that Dr. Stein can invest twice as much on getting the Greens on the ballot, building our state and local parties, and putting our Green New Deal agenda in the public eye.

As of Monday, February 20th, two states have qualified (CA, MA), one state is close (NY) and four states are halfway there (IL, MD, VA, WI).

Our goal is to qualify in our first 10 states by March 15th.

States that have qualified: California, Massachusetts

3/4 of the way there: New York

Halfway there: Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Wisconsin

1/4 of the way there: D.C., Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington

Raised something: Every state.

The full email can be read here.

Noted Libertarian Economist Endorses Lee Wrights for President, Joins Campaign

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

BURNET, Texas (Feb. 9) – Ken Schoolland, a long-term board member of the International Society for Individual Liberty and associate professor at Hawaii Pacific University, has endorsed Lee Wrights for President and joined the campaign as economic advisor.

In libertarian circles Schoolland is best known as the author of the animated video “The Philosophy of Liberty” popular on the Internet. He wrote the illustrated libertarian primer “The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible: A Free Market Odyssey,” which has been translated into more than 40 languages.

Schoolland, who was Hawaii LP chair for five years, is also the author of “Shogun’s Ghost,” an expose on education in Japan, where he taught before accepting his current position in Honolulu. He is a member of the Mont Pelerin Society, an international organization of economists, philosophers, historians, intellectuals, business leaders, and others who favor classical liberalism.

ISIL is a non-profit, non-partisan libertarian educational organization encouraging activism in libertarian and individual rights.

Schoolland issued this statement:

“I like Ron Paul. I like Gary Johnson. I’d probably like all the libertarian candidates running for President. But liking someone isn’t a reason to vote for them. When I became a member of the Libertarian Party back in 1976 I signed a non-aggression pledge. I take that pledge very seriously. That has been my guiding principle ever since.”

“I simply don’t vote for anyone who compromises on that principle, as the Libertarian Party has too often been willing to do in recent years to broaden candidate popularity. I applaud Ron Paul and Gary Johnson for promoting the libertarian program, but if people don’t grasp the underlying principle, then gains will turn to losses in an instant of mob passion. No compromise with principle.

“The libertarian message is rooted in an appreciation of individual rights … not state’s rights, not practical moderation. That is why I enthusiastically join the Lee Wrights campaign and endorse him for the 2012 Libertarian Party Presidential nomination. When I listen to Lee Wrights speak, as he did at the Libertarian Party of Hawaii convention last May – traveling on his own dime – I was reminded of that great, successful libertarian abolitionist, William Lloyd Garrison, who said:

I am aware, that many object to the severity of my language; but is there not cause for severity? I will be as harsh as truth, and as uncompromising as justice. On this subject, I do not wish to think, or speak, or write, with moderation. No! No! Tell a man whose house is on fire, to give a moderate alarm; tell him to moderately rescue his wife from the hand of the ravisher; tell the mother to gradually extricate her babe from the fire into which it has fallen; — but urge me not to use moderation in a cause like the present. I am in earnest — I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch — and I will be heard.”

R. Lee Wrights

R. Lee Wrights, 53, a libertarian writer and political activist, is seeking the presidential nomination because he believes the Libertarian message in 2012 must be a loud, clear and unequivocal call to stop all war. To that end he has pledged that 10 percent of all donations to his campaign will be spent for ballot access so that the stop all war message can be heard in all 50 states. Wrights is a lifetime member of the Libertarian Party and co-founder and editor of the free speech online magazine Liberty For All. Born in Winston-Salem, N.C., he now lives and works in Texas.

Political Marketing Campaign Basics

Monday, October 24th, 2011

What’s a good political campaign without some marketing tactics thrown in? Useless!  All political campaigns need to have a well thought out approach to target voters.   Most campaigns will include bumper sticker printing efforts showing the candidate’s name, party and year. Other efforts include distributing flyers door to door and hanging political posters. Flyers have [...]

Dodson Campaign Meeting

Please join us for a very important event tomorrow night:

Tuesday 27th, 7:00 PM
SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE LIBRARY
Browsing Room – See Map Below

Sweet Briar Young Democrats with Rob Dean

The Sweet Briar Young Democrats are hosting this event, along with the Dodson Campaign and the Amherst County Democrats. You are invited to attend and to show your support for our next State Senator, Bert Dodson.      Only 6 weeks until Election Day. Now is the time to get involved.

The road shown at the bottom of the map is the one leading directly from the campus main entrance on 29.        Number 1 on the map is the guard shack if you need directions.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bert and  ”The Hardest Working Campaign Team in Politics”
We will dedicate the entire evening to Bert’s campaign staff.     They will seek our advice on some community-based operations we can put into place to help assure a Democratic Victory.
There is simply no other choice.
Bert will be a great State Senator, one we’ll be proud to call our own.     We all know that.      But there’s more…
The very narrow majority we now have in the VA Senate must be held.     It’s the only thing protecting us now from a statewide Right-Wing majority – House of Delegates, State Senate, and Governor. We must not let this happen.
Imagine the likes of McDonnell, Cuccinelli, Cantor, and others of their ilk in the Party formerly known as Republican, running amok, unchecked, in our great Commonwealth.     Well, you get the idea.
We’ll take a good look at Dodson’s opponent, Tom Garrett, too.     It’s not a pretty picture.
So, again, please join us tomorrow night:
SWEET BRIAR COLLEGE LIBRARY
Browsing Room
7:00 PM
Sincerely,
Dave Burford, Chairman
Democrats Launch Campaign To Counter Alleged GOP Voter Suppression
Thursday, October 6th, 2011
As this blog posted on Monday, a new Brennan Center for Justice study (PDF) finds that a string of election laws passed in Texas and 12 other states — and proposed in 21 more states — since the 2008 presidential election could block up to five million voters from polling places in 2012.
All IDs must be unexpired or expired no earlier than 60 days before the election. Acceptable identification includes:
  • A driver’s license, election ID certificate, or personal ID card issued by the Department of Public Safety (an election certificate issued to a person 70 years or older does not expire);
  • U.S. military ID card that contains the person’s photograph;
  • U.S. citizenship certificate with a photograph;
  • U.S. passport; or
  • A license to carry a concealed handgun.
Student IDs and Military Veteran IDs are not accepted in Texas for purposes of identification for voting.
Those laws could disproportionately suppress turnout of younger voters, minorities and lower-income voters who have traditionally voted for Democratic candidates. The Brennan Center estimates that the new laws could affect some 171 electoral votes, including those of five swing states for the November 2012 presidential election.
All but two of the new election laws were passed by Republican controlled legislatures and signed by Republican governors, leading the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) to cry foul. To preserve ballot access for voters who have been eligible to vote in past elections, but who may be blocked from voting in 2012, the DSCC has launched the “2012 Election Protection Project.”
The 2012 Election Protection Project has set up an “Election Protection Project Action Center” website to serve both as an information hub on potential voter suppression and a conduit to help voters register online. The project will broadcast online advertisements on Twitter, Facebook, Google and mobile text devices. The project will also promote petition and email outreach campaigns to raise awareness about new voting restrictions.
President Barack Obama last week told a radio audience in an interview with radio host Michael Smerconish that he’s made sure the Justice Department is reviewing restrictive voting laws passed across the country.
SMERCONISH: Are the goal posts being moved on you in 2012? In my native Pennsylvania there’s a move afoot that would change the way in which electoral votes are apportioned. You picked up 21 in ’08, you’d of only had a net gain of one if this new rule, this new system were to come into effect. I look at that, and the requirement of photo IDs in some states, and the reduction of advanced voting and I wonder what’s going on out there on a grand level. What’s your level of concern? [...]
OBAMA: With respect to Pennsylvania the people of Pennsylvania will ultimately decide how they want to allocate their electoral votes, and I’ll leave it up to them. I will say that my big priority is making sure that as many people are participating in our democracy as possible. Some of these moves in some of the other states that we’ve seen—trying to make it tougher to vote, restricting ballot access, making it hard on seniors, making it hard on young people. I think that’s a bit mistake and I have made sure that our Justice Department’s taken a look at what’s being done across the country to ensure that people aren’t being denied access to the franchise.
But as a practical matter, the DOJ’s reach is limited. Officials with DOJ’s Civil Rights Division are reviewing voter ID laws passed in South Carolina and Texas because both states have a history of discrimination and are covered by Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. DOJ told South Carolina in August that they need more info before making a decision and in September told Texas they have more questions. But for all the other states that passed voter ID laws this year that aren’t subject to Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, DOJ intervention is impossible, until after the 2012 election.
Ken Moellman campaign update for September
LIBERTARIAN MOELLMAN MAKES THE BALLOT
On August 2nd, Ken and a handful of core supporters filed the petition in Frankfort, with a total of 8,119 signatures.
On August 3rd, the Secretary of State’s office accepted 7,844 of those signatures.
On September 8th, Republicans sued to remove Ken from the ballot. There was a good bit of media generated by the lawsuit. On September 12th, Republicans dropped the lawsuit.
A huge amount of gratitude is owed to those who helped with the drive, either through collecting signatures on their own or by donating to help offset the costs of the professional petitioners.
The process was gruelling and took a lot of time and resources. The ballot access measures intentionally handicap anyone who dares to run outside of the Democrat and Republican circles.
POLLING IN THE STATE TREASURER’S RACE
A poll conducted in late August by PPP (Public Policy Polling) has Ken at 16%! That’s absolutely huge, in a three-way race. (43% D / 28% R / 16% L / 13% Undec)
The PPP poll also showed that Ken was pulling from across the political spectrum. The base of support came from 13% of those who self-identified as “Very Liberal”, 12% “Somewhat Liberal”, 17% “Moderate”, 15% “Somewhat Conservative”, and 19% “Very Conservative”.
Other polls have shown Ken lower, but with the momentum in his favor. The cn|2 poll shows that Ken gained while the others in his race slipped backward.
The campaign has the momentum, but must continue to keep up the pressure in order to keep up that moment.
If you can help, the campaign needs volunteers and donations.
CAMPAIGN SEEKING ADDITIONAL ENDORSEMENTS
One of the ways that traditional parties and campaigns show support is with endorsements from various organizations.
Sadly, most of these endorsements are already locked up before the race even begins. Those that aren’t, generally ignore any non-establishment candidates.
The campaign has picked up a few endorsements so far, but is looking to pick up more.
If you know of a good organization that isn’t locked into an establishment pick, please let the campgin know through the contact page on the website.
A list of all endorsements will be released in mid-October.
KEN IN THE MEDIA
Ken has been picking up some good media, especially in Louisville. The Courier-Journal has covered Ken pretty well.
Lexington has been mostly ignoring the campaign, which exception to Leland Conway’s show, and a reminder that the now-Lexington-based Club for Growth still backs Ken’s plan to eliminate the treasurer’s office.
To help the campaign, send a letter to the editor for your local paper, and ask them why they’re not doing a better job of covering the two non-Democrat, non-Republican candidates on the ballot this year. If you’d like to go into more detail, go ahead and do so.
A letter campaign will hopefully get Ken’s name in the paper and make the particular outlet realize that there is support for Ken out there, and therefore make them more likely to report on the campaign.
Also, you can set up a google news alert to let you know when Ken’s name hits the media. Because it’s a rare-enough name, set up “Moellman” as your google alert. Then, when a story is run, you will receive and email. The campaign asks that you then go to that media outlet and leave a positive comment.
You can see some of the media coverage Ken has picked up on the campaign website’s Media section.
NOTHIN’ FANCY FARM EVENT A BIG SUCCESS
While the establishment events, such as Fancy Farm, are often hostile to non-establishment types, the campaign has been working around these exclusions.
In late August, Ken attended the second annual Nothin’ Fancy Farm, an event created for the people, by the people.
How non-establishment is it? People were allowed to speak as long as they held the crowd’s interest. Politicans, however, were limited to three minutes.
Ken did very well at this event. Not only did he speak to a lot of the public, but he was also the cook! Ken was in charge of grilling the hot dogs at the event.
We wish to thank Mike Maggard for the use of his farm for this event! There were also a lot of great volunteers who put in countless hours to prepare for the event. This is what grassroots organization is all about, and we look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
ASK KEN A QUESTION
In the “Ask Ken a question” section, Ken answers common questions. This edition, the question is: “Can you actually eliminate this office?
Ken’s response: “In 2008, Senator Damon Thayer proposed legislation in Frankfort to end the office. The Kentucky Club for Growth has continued to endorse the plan. This has been done; the last time was in Texas in the mid-90s by a Democrat. This issue is non-partisan. It’s not about left and right, but about right and wrong. We’ve been very successful in explaining why this office is wasteful, and have been receiving support from across the political spectrum. We just need to make sure people know about the campaign, and that’s why we need campaign supporters to help spread the word.”
DONATIONS SOUGHT
We are asking you to help in covering campaign costs, by donating to the campaign.
We know that money is tight out there. A weekly or monthly donation can help in a huge way, without committing a large sum of money upfront.
Ken is still matching donations!
