The mummy museum features 122 naturally mummified corpses that were originally interred during a cholera epidemic that broke out in1833 near Guanajuato, Mexico. The mummies were disinterred between 1865 and 1958 due to a tax requirement. A special tax was ordered that required relatives to pay to keep their loved ones bodies in a cemetery. If the tax could not be paid the bodies were disinterred. That is how 99percent of the bodies wound up in the museum. In the early 1900’s the bodies began attracting tourists, so those in charge of the museum would allow visitors to view the bones for a few pesos. Later the El Museo De Las Momias was established.
Guanajuato
The city of Guanajuato not only features the Mummy Museum, but has a great history as well. It was declared an UNESCO site in 1988 and is also the site of the first battle in the Mexican War of Independence. There is now stable settlement date for the city due to the fact that it was a mining settlement for a while so settlers came and went. Other museums include the Don Quixote Museum, the Casa de las Leyendes, or house of the legends. Another popular museum is The Museo del la Inquisicion, which is a museum of the Holy Inquisition, this features many of the torture devices used in the inquisition. Just like the Museo De Las Momias, the Museo del la Inquisicion is a bit on the morbid side.
